And, yes, there are some core reasons why using ground beef for making burger patties is a good idea.
Makes It Easier To Buy Beef In Bulk
If you make burger patties from ground beef, then you can buy beef in bulk and store them for future use. Besides, many stores offer discounts when you purchase meat in bulk.

What Ingredients Do You Need To Make Homemade Burger Patties?
Before I start the discussion on how to make burger patties from ground beef at home, I think it is important to tell you about the ingredients I usually prefer for this recipe.
Ingredients You Will Need For This Simple Hamburger Patty Recipe
- Ground Beef.
- Sheet Pan.
- Parchment Paper or Waxed Paper.
I will use the above-mentioned ingredients for this simple hamburger patty recipe. However, you can add more ingredients depending on your tastes and preferences.
By the by, if you make any changes, don’t forget to share that with me in the comment section below.
Choosing the Right Meat Cut For Making Hamburger Patties
When the topic is making great hamburger patties, the factor on which I put my main focus is choosing the right beef cut.
You should keep in mind that one of the most vital aspects of preparing the perfect hamburger patty is selecting the right meat cut.
Well, it is to be noted that I am not referring to the right cut of beef meat only, but I am also indicating the right meat/fat ratio, and accurate meat grinding procedure – it has to be the perfect combination of all these things!
Besides, there is another option available in front of you – just go to a nearby grocery store and purchase ground beef from there.
However, I will never suggest you to use store-bought ground beef if ‘taste’ is your main priority.
Note: If you can prepare ground beef at home, the freshness of such ground beef will help create a more tender hamburger patty.
The next thing you have to do is to select the right cut. In this case, I always prefer to opt for 80/20 beef (80% meat, 20% fat). You can also go for the 90/10 meat-fat ratio because it is considered a healthy diet.
However, it won’t be a good idea to choose lean beef, for instance, ground sirloin because it will be dry for making tender hamburger patty.
Note: Keep in mind that if you want to make a juicy hamburger patty, then there should be higher fat content in the burger patty. However, this doesn’t mean that you should go for anything more than an 80/20 meat-fat ratio.
Why Should You Grind Your Own Beef For Homemade Burger Patties?
As I have stated earlier you have two options available in front of you –
- Grinding your own beef at home.
- Purchasing ground beef from the local grocery store.
Always remember that when you grind your own beef for making burger patties, you get a number of benefits and advantages.
First of all, you have the full information about the beef (meaning where it is actually coming from).
At the same time, you get full control over the fat content in your burger patty. Also, you get complete freedom when it comes to choosing the beef cuts that will be used for grinding purposes.
For most of you, these seem negligible factors, but in reality, these are the factors that can create the ultimate difference in terms of taste.
In short, grinding your own beef will provide you with the freshest meat possible along with the perfect fat content in your burger patties.
Furthermore, grinding your own meat is much healthier and it offers a healthy diet for anyone who wants to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Lastly, you can also save some bucks if you ground your own beef. Based on my market study, I have found that grinding your own meat is much cheaper than the store-bought ones.

How To Make Burger Patties From Ground Beef? – [All Steps Explained]
At this point, I am assuming that your ground beef is ready for making burger patties. So, in this section, I am going to describe all the steps required for making hamburger patties from ground beef.
Well, the procedure I am about to explain won’t be a tough one, if you study the following discussion with your full concentration.
So, here we go….
Step 1 – Placing Ground Beef In A Large Bowl
In the first step, you have to place all of your ground beef in a clean bowl. To maintain hygiene, I would recommend you to clean your bowl right before placing the ground beef.
Step 2 – Dividing the Ground Beef
Now, take a clean sheet pan and line it using parchment paper or waxed paper. This way it will ensure an easier clean-up when you are done with making burger great hamburger patties out of ground beef.
It is now time to divide the ground beef for making the burger patties. Actually, it mainly depends on the size of the buns you are going to use for preparing the burgers.
Keep in mind that if the fat content in your ground beef is higher, then there is a higher chance that your hamburgers may get shrunk while cooking them.
If you prefer using an 80/20 beef/fat ratio or even higher, then I would suggest you to make the beef patties a bit larger than the size of your buns.
On the contrary, if you choose lean beef meat, then you can keep the size of the patties similar to that of the buns.
Note: It is very important to ensure that all the patties must be of the same size so you don’t have to face any problems while cooking them. Remember that if the size of the patties differs, then you may face problems like undercooked or overcooked beef patties.
Pro Tip: You can use a kitchen scale for this purpose so you can keep the size the same for all the beef patties you are going to make from ground beef.
Step 3 – Making the Patties
As mentioned in the earlier step, you can use a kitchen scale while dividing ground beef for each of the burger patties.
In addition, you can also use your hands to form a ball out of the ground meat. Let’s say that you have made 5-1- balls out of your ground beef (depending on the amount of your ground beef).
Generally, you can make 4 burger patties if you use one pound of ground beef.
Now, it is time to shape the patties!
Step 4 – Shaping the Burger Patties
In this step, I will tell you how you turn those balls (made in the earlier step) into burger patties. Well, this procedure is really very simple even for someone who has never done it.
Keep a ball in the palm of one of your hands and then use the other hand to press it. While pressing, you have to keep in mind that it is needed to be done evenly so you can give a good shape to your burger patties.
Pro Tip: Always start with pressing down from the center down. This way you can avoid problems like getting cracks around the edges of the patties.
Step 5 – Depressing the Center
Always remember that burger patties tend to shrink during cooking, and it may cause deep cracks on the edges.
In order to prevent problems like these, you can depress the center portion of your beef patties so the edges of the patties can get some extra meat.
Pro Tip: You can keep the thickness of the center around 1/2-inch and the edges could be 3/4-inch. Try this and thank me later! 😉
This is the exact same way that I follow while making burger patties from ground beef in my kitchen. If you have any questions regarding any of the above-mentioned steps, don’t forget to comment below!
How to Season Burger Patties?
When you are thinking about the right way to season your burger patties, there is no special rule as such.
However, as a thumb rule (for beginners), I would suggest you use only salt and pepper for your burger patties.
You can also go for other ingredients like chili powder or cayenne, but make sure that you use those sparingly as those things will burn while cooking and they will affect the taste of your patty in a negative manner.
At this point, it is important to mention that you should only use salt & pepper (and other ingredients) after putting fresh ground beef into the grinder.
Adding all those spices before grinding will not be a good option because it won’t mix properly with the meat & other ingredients.
Here, I have tried to give a brief overview of how to season your burger patties. If interested, you can study this detailed discussion on how do you season burger patties.
How To Make Hamburger Patties Stick Together?
Many of you might be wondering how to make hamburger patty stick together? Well, in this section I will try to discuss some of the most effective methods that will help you in making well-built burgers.
First of all, if there is a reason for your burger patties falling apart then it is using excess water while making patties or not using enough salt in them.
Another reason why burgers have a tendency to fall apart during the cooking process is that they are over-handled which causes the patties to get drained of their juices.
In order for you to make your burgers stick together, it is quite necessary that you add sufficient amount of salt in them while grinding along with using enough moisture (which is not actually needed).
However, don’t add too much water (because doing this will cause burger patties to fall apart during the cooking process).
Keep in mind – if you want a better solution to avoid your burger patty from falling apart then I would suggest you put the frozen cube-shaped meat inside a zip lock bag and then shake it gently until all the ingredients are mixed perfectly.
After making a smooth mixture, simply pour out the contents from the plastic bag into the grinder hopper and start grinding.
This is what I follow in my kitchen when I want to make my hamburger patties stick together.
If you know any other technique, don’t forget to share that with me!
Burger Toppings You Can Try Out
There are many burger toppings available, but I am going to mention some of the most popular ones in this section.
The first-ever topping which is used for making burger patties is cheese.
You can also use onions for giving your hamburger an additional crunchy taste. Tomato slices are another classic option for burger patties along with lettuce leaves.
However, you should avoid putting cucumber on your beef patty if possible because it will increase its cooking time and moreover cucumbers have a tendency to lose water while cooking resulting in weak & squishy burgers.
Some of my personal favorites are as follows:
- Grilled pineapple slices & barbecue sauce or chili sauce.
- Pickled red Onions.
- Gourmet Burger Sauce.
- Caramelized Onions.
- Big Mac Sauce.
- Refrigerator dill pickles.
Depending on your tastes and preferences, you can also choose your own burger toppings as well.
Burger Patty Nutrition Facts
In this section, I am going to describe the Nutritional Facts associated with Burger Patties.
Actually, many people out there do think that red meat is not a good choice when it comes to a healthy diet.
This is why I thought it is necessary to discuss this matter in detail because there are many misconceptions regarding the nutritional content of beef.
Here, I have tried my best to provide you with a brief overview of how much protein, fat, and other nutrients are found in 100 gm Burger Patties.
There is approx. 20 gm of protein present in 100 gm Red Meat (including ground beef). The amount of protein will be slightly higher if you take lean red meat into account.
According to Nutritionists, 1/3rd part of the total fat found in red meat should come from saturated fats & 2/3rds from unsaturated fats.
In other words, around 70% of all saturated fats should come from chicken breast, salmon, or tuna fish.
Here is another interesting fact regarding fat found in red meat: According to some studies conducted on lab animals, people who eat beef that contains a higher amount of saturated fats are more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease compared to those who avoid red meat completely.
Approximately 350 mg of sodium can be found in every 100 gm Ground Beef / Beef Patties. This amount of salt is somewhat higher than recommended daily allowance which is 500mg/day for women & 800mg/day for men.
The amount of carbs present in 100 gm Ground Beef Patties is 4 grams only. But you should know that these carbohydrates are mostly found in the form of fiber which has many health benefits.
According to researchers, red meat can alter the level of this chemical inside your brain if consumed in enormous amounts (or by consuming it frequently).
Overall, 100 gm of Burger Patties will give you approx. 179 calories which is more or less equal to one large Egg.
So, what does this mean?
The point I am trying to make here is that if you avoid red meat from your diet then all the nutrients which are essential for healthy living will be missing from your diet as well…
In simple words, it means that there is no need to totally eliminate beef from your diet unless and until its presence in your diet brings about a negative impact on your health!
